Why Visit St. John's?

Some come searching for inner peace. Some come looking for practical ways to give something back to the community in Christ's name.  Some want a place to begin again.  Others are looking for a place of love and acceptance.  Some are struggling to come to terms with a serious illness or death.  Some simply want to experience the presence of God.  Most stay because they feel comfortable, or they sense God's presence, or the words of Jesus come to life for them in a way that helps with the challenges of life.  If you want to know about what Episcopalians believe before you visit, then following the link to our "Following Christ" page.

Suppose You Were Looking for a Church Home This Year...

What specific features and benefits would you search for?  Perhaps your preferences would include...understandable, useful, encouraging information about the spiritual part of your life.  Greater inner peace and security.  St John's strictly adheres to the Episcopal tradition that the Rector is the Shepherd of his/her flock.  Our Priest follows this tradition by trying to help each individual parishioner meet their own spiritual needs and grow in their faith.

Understanding the Episcopalian Sunday Service

The Episcopalian service is based on almost 2000 years of Jewish and Christian history and tradition.  Five hundred years ago, when the Episcopalian Church was formed as a result of a schism between the Pope and the King of England, the Anglican Liturgy was developed.  Our Liturgy was derived from the Roman Catholic Liturgy, with one of the big differences between the Anglican service is spoken in English and recorded in the Book of Common Prayer.  The original Book of Common Prayer is considered to be one of the great works of English Literature, and it is one of the most quoted books in the world.  The Anglican Service starts out with a call for fellowship and includes Bible readings from the Old and New Testaments, the Gospels and the Psalms, followed by a sermon that relates these readings to our belief, spirituality, and daily life.  The Confession follows and reminds us that we are sinners in God's eyes and only He can provide forgiveness.  Then comes the Prayers of the People, and a blessing called the Peace where the congregation greets one another.  The service concludes with the Celebration of the Eucharist, a celebration of the Last Supper that unites Christians of all denominations.  The Episcopal tradition allows any baptized Christian, whether or not they are members of the Episcopal Church, to partake of the Eucharist.  A detailed description of the history and meaning of the Episcopalian Liturgy and Eucharist can be found here.
